Acne is a non-infectious common skin condition that most of us will suffer with at some point in our lives. It presents itself in many forms. In its minor form it shows as small pimples or blackheads or white heads. In its more severe form it can be deep inflamed puss filled cysts and can easily become infected and even lead to scarring.

They usually appear on the face, back and chest and can cause the sufferer both painful and emotional distress.

acne_diagramAcne occurs when the holes (pores) of the skin from which hair follicles grow become blocked.

The Hair follicles are naturally lubricated by sebum which is produced by the sebaceous glands which are situated near the the hair follicle. When the pore becomes blocked sebum builds up and bacteria multiply causing the sebum to become infected and then the body sends antibodies to fight the infection. The result is inflammation and puss build up which causes the pustules and cysts familiar to acne sufferers.

What are the causes of acne ?

There are many causes of acne: Here are some common causes.

  • Hormonal imbalance, typically found in teenagers.

Coconut oil however, is a great natural remedy that contains no harsh chemicals or preservatives, unlike many over the counter products. As well as having a multitude of other health benefits makes it a good alternative treatment for acne.

How to use Coconut as a treatment for Acne.

For best results you will need to use the coconut oil internally as well as externally.

External use.

skin careOnly use an organic, virgin, unrefined, cold pressed coconut oil.

Take coconut oil and add a couple of drops of tea tree oil to it.

First make sure that your face is washed and dried, you might also want to put a hot towel over your face as this will assist in opening the pores of the skin.

Take the oil onto your finger tips and gently massage into the affected areas of your skin for a few minutes. Massaging the skin will help to lift out any of the impurities that are blocking the pores like dead skin or old make up and allow the oil to penetrate the pores enough to reach the infected sebum.

Your skin will feel a little greasy for a few minutes until your skin has absorbed all of the oil.

Now do this just once and wait a couple of days to see how your skin reacts. This treatment has benefits to some sufferers but has reportedly made the condition worse in some.

Once you have observed the results then you can carry on with this routine two or three times a week until you see the desired results.

So this method is directly attacking the soreness the inflammation and fighting the infection present.

  1. Coconut oil is awesome! I’ve been using it for oral hygiene, and I’m glad to find out it can help with acne too. It makes sense. And I love that, as you have said, it is gentle on the skin, natural, without any harsh chemicals or preservatives.

  2. hi Tim
I am learning so much about the properties of coconut related products on your site! I had no idea that coconut oil could be helpful in the case of acne. It makes sense though if it is cleansing and helps regulate hormones. However, does it have any sort of antibacterial properties? Like the topical lotions sold for acne? Oil for skin has become quite popular in the past years. Even though I was resistant at the beginning (thinking it would make my skin greasy), I have used a few and was satisfied with them.

    • Yes Emily Coconut oil contains fatty acids that have antibacterial qualities and are particularly effective against bacteria found in acne.

I would like I said in the article be frugal with the amount you use, don’t just slather it on :)

I have shared your site btw on my social sites. I havn’t read all your posts yet but have a few hours free tomorrow so expect a few comments.

      All the best

  3. I know this if off topic but I’m looking
into starting my own weblog and was wondering what all is needed to get
set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost
a pretty penny? I’m not very web smart so I’m not 100% positive.
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
